Other Site Characteristics

Situated in the archipelago of Bothnian Bay, mainly covered by 7004 hectares water areas with 579 hectares landareas including the islands of Rödkallen, Storgrundet, Sör-Äspen, Grillklippan, Sandgrönnorna, Båkgrönnan, Skvalpen-Nyvallen. Above high geologic and botanic values there is a richness of birdlife with the highest abundancy of Sterna caspia-colonies of Sweden with more than 100's of pairs. There is large distinctions between the islands. Sandgrönnorna has glacifluvial origin and consists mostly of sands, while Sör_Äspen comprises a 170 ha flat morainlayer covered by spruce forest with qualities of primary successions of old-growth and other parts coated only by a very thin and sensitive layer of vegetation. The less than 5 ha small island of only stones and blocks, Grillklippan, has particularly high values for the breeding birds, especially Alca torda and Cepphus grylle. On Rödkallen there is a chapell, that was built year 1800 by local fishermen. 1872 the island became a lighthouse.

4.2 Quality and importance

Despite only a few hectares land the island Rödkallen-Sörespen houses many habitats of primary successions, birdbreeding sites, but also species such as Artemisia campestris bottnica and Moehringia laterifolia, situated in an archipelago strongly influenced by the progressing landelevation, wind and seawaves. Other important species motivated "other reason" are in general regional endangered.
