Other Site Characteristics

Ljubljansko barje is flatland south of Ljubljana. It is a depression several hundred meters deep, filled to the edges with fine riverine detritus. Area is a cultivated landscape, dominated by late-mown grasslands and cornfields. Unmanaged areas are covered with low bushes. On the north part are some flood plain forests. One of the main characteristics are mejice, long narrow lines (over 100 km) of vegetation and drainage ditches, with total length of more than 400 km. The biggest river on area is Ljubljanica, which has been supplying the river basin with a clay alluvium. Floods are therefore frequent, giving us the liberty to calssify Ljubljansko barje as a wetland as well as a grassland.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ljubljansko barje is one of the most important sites for grassland birds in Slovenia. It is the most important breeding place for Crex crex (50% of national pop.), and the most important wintering place for Circus cyaneus (30%). There is also a high number of breeding Sylvia nisoria (15%).
