Other Site Characteristics

The site is situated within the Váh, Nitra and Žitava rivers alluviums. The soils are mostly black soils. In the northern part of the site also white alkali (salt) soils are developed (Nové Zámky district, Tvrdošovce, Palárikovo, Šurany). The site is mostly of lowland or a waved lowland character. From pedological and geomorphological point of view the sand dunes formations in the wider surroundings of Hurbanovo, Imeľ, Nesvady and Bajč (i.e. Komárno district) are an outstanding feature of the site. However, currently they are changed with succession, especially with invasive wood species, e.g. Robinia pseudoacacia and only in a low range they are utilized for sand exploitation (e.g. Abov by Hurbanovo). In the rivers alluviums there are in places maintained the fragments of alluvial forests with a natural wood composition. Alluvium forests consist currently especially of cultivated poplars monocultures. An important part of the site is area of lower parts of Žitava and Nitra rivers with the unique ecosystems of alluvial forests fragments, wetlands and extensively used meadows maintained

4.2 Quality and importance

Site is one of the three most important areas in Slovakia for nesting of Coracias garrulus, Circus aeruginosus, Anthus campestris, Lanius minor and Dendrocopos syriacus. Regularly nest here more than 1% of national population of Alcedo atthis, Sylvia nisoria, Galerida cristata, Coturnix coturnix, Saxicola torquata and Falco vespertinus.
