Other Site Characteristics

The site supports habitats of rare and endangered species and it is characteristic for a high rate of the self-regulation processes. Geological basement is built by carbonate rocks that at times protrude the surface. Over the time, the Dunajec River and Lesnický potok stream have carved the deep gorges in the basement. These gorges now represent the dominant physical structures of the local landscape. Also typical for the local landscape are the narrow strips of fields, meadows and hedgerows.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is characteristic by complicated geological structure and richness of different life forms. Its plentiful habitats and species play an important part in the conservation of typical biological range of European continent. The site supports a rich mosaic of meadow, forest, rocky and aquatic habitats and has been under continual legal protection since 1932 when it became part of a nature reserve designated in the present territory of the Pieninský / Pieniny NP. Whole territory of the site presently belongs to the Pieninský / Pieniny National Park (PIENAP) established in 1967. Naturally diverse tree species composition of local forest ecosystems is the best guarantee of their prosperity. Naturally occurring species of trees and plants include among others also taxa Juniperus sabina, Taxus bacata, Dendranthema zawadskii and Spiraea media ssp. media. The site is also noted for its well-preserved agricultural landscape.
