Other Site Characteristics

Some 50 % of the site is covered with forests prominent of which are fairly diverse communities of 9130 Asperulo - Fagetum beech forests. Remaining sections of the site support communities of agricultural land whose development is a direct result of long established traditional forms of land management. These communities are dominated by 6510 Lowland hay meadows (Alopecurus pratensis, Sanguisorba officinalis) area of which has been partially overtaken by successional stage of self-seeded tree specimens. Geological basement is formed by carbonate rocks predominate of which are limestone and dolomite. These sporadically protrude the surface to form exposed rocky outcrops. Due to the basement, substrates are typical for a high content of skeletic particles. The site encompasses an exceptionally high number of underground cavities, abysses and caves (8310 Caves not open to public). At the same time, it fosters a number of flora and fauna species of international importance (Thlaspi caerulescens subsp. tatrense, Lacerta agilis, Lacerta viridis, several species of bats) as well a whole group of endemic (Aconitum moldavicum, Campanula xylocarpa, Dianthus praecox subsp. pseudopraecox, Draba lasiocarpa subsp. klasterskyi, Primula auricula subsp. hungarica, Scilla drunensis subsp. buekkensis, Sesleria heufleriana) and nationally protected plant species (Nepetaa pannonica, Orchis mascula subsp. signifera, etc.).

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is situated in the Slovenský kras NP / Slovak Karst NP holding at the same time the status of the UNESCO - MAB Biosphere Reserve. It also falls within the territory of the Important Bird Area (IBA) Slovenský kras and pending Slovenský kras SPA. The site provides valuable nesting grounds for a number of bird species of European importance, such as Lanius collurio, Lullula arborea, Caprimulgus europaeus, Sylvia nisoria, Picus canus, Dryocopus martius, Dendrocopos leucotos, Strix uralensis, Pernis apivorus, Ficedula albicollis and Bonasa bonasia. The site is noted for the occurrence of several bird species of national importance, one of them being Jynx torquilla. The site is famous for plethora of underground karstic features of outstanding natural beauty (caves, abysses) that have under the name "Caves of Aggtelek and Slovak Karst" been inscribed into the UNESCO World Heritage List (cross border site with Hungary). These underground phenomena are noted as valuable wintering grounds for several species of bats. The site within its borders features Nature Reserve Gerlachovské skaly / Gerlachovské Rocks.
