Other Site Characteristics

The site is built up by carbonates of the chočský nappe. From the morphological point of view, it is formed by a unique network of shallow and short valleys and hollows. Protection goal is to preserve the xerothermic clear-felled areas and oak communities with several nationally protected species of plants and animals. The site is the only place of the Carex halleriana occurrence in Slovakia, rich population of Onosma visianii is present as well. From invertebrates, fauna of butterflies is rich. New species - Polyomatus slovacicus - an endemic butterfly of Western Carpathians has been described here. From Hymenoptera, e.g. Eofereola rhombica represents the richest known population in Slovakia, Cleptes consimilis is the only population in Slovakia and rare is also the occurrence of Saga pedo and Cicada orni. From vertebrates, Lacerta viridis, Elaphe longissina, Coronella austriaca, Caprimulgus europaeus, etc. are present.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site includes the small-scaled protected areas: Tematínska lesostep National Nature Reserve (year of designation 1972), Javorníček National Nature Reserve (year of designation 1972) and Kňaží vrch Nature Reserve (year of designation 1988). With its habitat and species composition, the site significantly contributes to the preservation of typical European biodiversity.
