Other Site Characteristics

The territory of European significance called the Šimonka extends in the forest top highland zones of the northern tip of the Slanské vrchy mountain in the cadastral areas of the villages of Zlatá Baňa, Pavlovce, Petrovce, Hermanovce nad Topľou, Rudlov, Zámutov. A substantial part of the area occupies extensive beech forest stands( beech- flowery, acidophilous, lime-maple debris and maple-beech mountain forests), which are complemented by the sub-mountain mowing meadows. The occurrence of rock formations and the neighboring rock communities is also significant. Terrain depressions have created specific conditions for the occurrence of peat boggy alderwoods - a biotope of national importance. A relatively large area and preserved forest stands create suitable conditions for the occurrence of wolf and lynx, as well as a bear's stay. In the case of an Ursus arctos, it is likely to will be a stray individuals in the context of the expansion of the site. Due to the type of the area, it is necessary have to count with increasing frequency of its occurrence. Of other species of animals of European importance, there are 9 species of bats in the territory, for example Barbastella barbastellus, Myotis myotis, Myotis emarginatus. There are also more species of national importance, from animals, for example, Neomys fodiens, Neomys anomalus, Bufo viridis, Clematis alpina, Lycopodium clavatum, Woodsia ilvensis, Thelypteris palustris.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is characterized by a rich diversity of habitats and species, including well-preserved and relatively wide-ranging various types of beech stands that complement the habitat of rocks andmeadow stands. Significant is the representation of boggy alderwoods (biotope of national importance).Within the proposed territory, they are also the following protected areas are included in the network of protected areas of Slovakia: National Nature Reserves: Oblík (1964), Šimonka (1950), nature reserves: Hermanovské skály (1980), Zámutovské skaly (1981), Zámutovská jelšina ).The whole territory is part of the proposed protected bird area SKCHVU025 Slanské vrchy and it is also part of an important bird area (IBA).
