Other Site Characteristics

The proposed territory of European importance the Becherovská tisina is located northwest of Becherov village and includes the end of the Riečka valley to the state border with Poland. The geomorphologically area lies on the boundary between Busov and Ondavská vrchovina and it is built by tertiary flysch complex of strata of Magurská tektonická jednotka - račianska lithofacial unit. In the northeastern part of the territory along the Polish border, called Beskydy, the Zlínske súvrstvie builds a flysch development, alternating here sandstones, gray claystones and putrid lime claystones cliffs of the middle and upper Eocene. Opposite the southwest ridge from altitude of Javorina (881) to Paledovka (778) in the south builds the Zlínske súvrstvie group of strata, represented by fine-grained and coarse-grained of Makovické sandstones of the middle and upper eocene. Between the two mountain ridges of the northwest -southeast is the a terrain considered from west to east to the valley of Riečka. It is built by the Belovežské group of strata, represented by the red and green lower eocene claystones and the thiny-complex of strata sandstones with hieroglyphs. A substantial part of the territory occupies forests, almost 97%. Among the forest stands are mainly habitats of European importance: beech and fir floral forests, lime-maple debris forests, maple-beech mountain forests. The watercourses accompany the vegetation of mountain floodplain forests. The mosaic of habitats complements the biotopes of meadows and pastures. The occurrence of Canis lupus, Lynx lynx and Felis sylvestris were noticed in the area. Other species of European importance are represented by Bombina variegata, Rosalia alpina. There are many bird species here, for example, Strix uralensis, Glaucidium passerinum, Aegolius funereus and the like. There are more plant species of national importance, for example Phyllitis scolopendrium, Taxus baccata, etc., from animals it is Glis glis and the others.

4.2 Quality and importance

The area is characterized by a rich diversity of habitats and species and, due to its large area, includes well-preserved and quite extensive different types of beech stands. Particular attention is paid to the occurrence of Taxus baccata, the locality representing the northernmost occurrence of yew on the territory of Slovakia. From the network of protected areas of Slovakia, there is the national nature reserve Becherovská tisina, which was declared already in 1954.
