Other Site Characteristics

Il sito è caratterizzato da alternanza di zone di versante e di fondovalle. A S vi sono estesi affioramenti rocciosi. Nella parte NE sono presenti aree piane in quota con pendenza molto modesta, forme a terrazzo e fasce terrazzate. Il substrato geologico è dato da arenarie con grana variabile da finissima a grossa, altenate ad argilliti e siltiti. All'interno del sito è compresa gran parte della Foresta Demaniale Regionale del Gottero, ricadente nel comune di Varese Ligure. Si tratta di un'area di circa 500 ettari di bosco misto e ceduo di faggio avviato ad alto fusto.

4.2 Quality and importance

Il sito comprende faggete relativamente ben conservate e di notevole bellezza paesaggistica. La posizione geografica a cavallo tra diversi bacini e i contatti fra foresta e praterie permettono la frequentazione di una ricca fauna di vertebrati (aquila, lupo) di prioritario interesse comunitario. Sono inoltre presenti numerose specie elencate negli allegati di direttive/convenzioni internazionali, endemiti di rilievo oltre a specie di notevole interesse biogeografico. Il sito infine ospita habitat prioritari e le seguenti specie che sono state proposte dalla Regione Liguria (a causa del loro interesse biogeografico, per la loro rarità o perchè indicatrici di qualità ambientale) per linserimento nellallegato II della direttiva habitat (92/43 cee): Microtus nivalis; Philorhizus liguricus; Pterosticus morio liguricus ; Nebria tibialis tibialis.
