Other Site Characteristics

The site extends along the Ptich River floodplain for more than 70 km. The river heavily meanders, there are numerous oxbows and distributaries, the floodplain is waterlogged. Large areas of the site are covered with wood, mostly alder and pine. A large share in the forest cover belongs to broad-leaved timber.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is of the utmost importance for preservation of a globally endangered species, greater spotted eagle, aquila clanga (approximately 1% of the national population); and Eurasian bittern, botaurus stellaris (more than 2% of the national population of the species). It also provides breeding grounds for black stork, ciconia nigra (2-5 couples); common crane, grus grus (2-5 couples); common kingfisher, alcedo atthis (10-15 couples). This territory is also an important habitat of such species as Emys orbicularis, Misgurnus fossilis.
