Other Site Characteristics

The territory of the site is situated in the floodplain of the rivers Berezina and Gaina. The width of their plains makes 1.5 and 3 km correspondingly. The floodplain is surrounded by mostly broadleaved bogged forests as well as confer woods. A part of the area is occupied by the transition mires. The length of the Berezina river on the area of the site makes 12 km, of the river gaina – 24 km. The river beds are meandering.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is most significant for the conservation of wetland species, as well as of the globally threatened species – Aquila clanga (2 pairs). About 1 % of the national population of Crex Crex is breeding here; more than 1 % of the national population of Chlidonias niger, Haliaeetus albicilla, Porzana porzana, Chlidonias niger, Larus minutus are breeding on teh site. Acrocephalus paludicola (3 males) inhabit the site as well. The site is important for a number of other bird species. This territory is also an important habitat of such species as Unio crassus, Vertigo angustior, Misgurnus fossilis, Eudontomyzon mariae, Rhodeus amarus.
