4.2 Quality and importance

Das Gebiet ist berühmt für xerotherme Lebensräume, in denen eine große Vielfalt spezialisierter Arten lebt, darunter auch petrophile Pflanzen. Üblicher Weise bilden trockenes Grasland, Weinberge, Buschland, Ackerfelder, Weiden und Mähwiesen ein Lebensraummosaik mit vielen Ökotonen und einer hohen Biodiversität. Früher beweidete Trockenrasen auf kalkhaltigen Substraten beherbergen sowohl viele seltene Pflanzenarten wie Adonis vernalis, Pulsatilla spp. oder Allium flavum als auch Heuschrecken (Stenobothrus nigromaculatus) und Reptilien (Zamenis longissimus, Coronella austriaca). Insbesondere an den Rändern angrenzender Wälder entwickelt sich eine sehr reiche Folgevegetation mit Büschen (z. B. Cotinus coggygria) und hohen Kräutern (z. B. dem schönen Dictamnus albus). Typische Arten, die in hohen Populationsdichten zu finden sind, sind Mantis religiosa, Lacerta viridis and Limenitis camilla. Das Gebiet umfasst gut erhaltene Eichen-Wälder (Trauben-Eiche, Zerreiche), die auf typische und sehr alte, traditionelle Weise bewirtschaftet werden: Bäume werden zu unterschiedlichen Erntezeiten am selben Ort verwendet; die jüngeren als Brennstoff und die beeindruckenden alten als teures Eichenholz). Diese vielfältige Lebensraumstruktur ermöglicht es sogar Spezialisten für Altholzbestände (z. B. xylobionte Käfer wie Cerambyx cerdo), dort zu leben. Die Kalksteinfelsen weisen viele Höhlen auf, in denen eine interessante Höhlenfauna lebt, wie z.B. mehrere Fledermausarten (Myotis spp. etc.).
