Other Site Characteristics

As a part of the southern Viennese Basin the area of the "Steinfeld" is situated north of the city of Wiener Neustadt. It spans over about 100 km².A large gravel surface, which was deposited by the river Piesting during the last ice-age, has determining influence on the charateristic vegetation. Due to the dryness of the soils and the semi-arid character of the Pannonian climate the "Steinfeld" contains the largest primary steppe of Central Europe. Dry arable land with a high proportion of set aside fields is another important habitat type for steppe species. From 1930 to 1970 parts of the "Steinfeld" have been afforested with pine (Pinus nigra). This site also includes the habitat classes "Bogs, Marshes, Water fringed vegetation, Fens" and "Humid grassland, Mesophile grassland" with a cover of <1% for each class.

4.2 Quality and importance

The "Steinfeld" contains the most extensive Stipa-grassland of Central Europe. This grassland belongs to the priority habitat type 6240 "Subpannonische Steppen-Trockenrasen" and forms a significant part of the total area of this habitat type within the EC. Furthermore, the "Steinfeld" houses more than 90 % of the population of the endemic Austrian snail Helicopsis striata austriaca (listed as priority species in annex II of Council directive 92/43 EEC).Due to the extent of dry grassland and dry arable land the "Steinfeld" gives place to remarkable populations of thermophilic species with eastern or southern centres of distribution.
