4.2 Quality and importance

Das Gesamte Gebiet des Hörfeldes erfüllt durch seine unberührte Flora und ornithologischen Besonderheiten die Voraussetzung zur Erklärung eines Feuchtgebietes von nationaler bis internationaler Bedeutung.Das Hörfeld ist ein großflächiges Feuchtgebiet von ca. 130 ha Ausmaß, wovon 90 ha auf kärntnerischem Gebiet und 40 ha auf steiermärkischem Gebiet liegen. Seine Entstehung verdankt es der letzten (Würm) Eiszeit, als sich ein Seitenarm des mächtigen Murgletschers über den Neumarkter Sattel bis in die Gegend des heutigen Hörfeldes vorschob.Durch Aufschüttung der Bäche vor allem von der Westseite der Seetaler Alpen stauten sich die Schmelzwässer zu einem See, der im Laufe der Jahrtausende verlandete und sich in Folge der natürlichen Sukzession in ein Flachmoor umwandelte. Dadurch setzte eine großflächige Torfbildung ein. Das Hörfeldmoor gehört durch seine unberührte Vegetation und seiner zahlreichen gefährdeten und seltenen Tier- und Pflanzenarten zu den bedeutendsten Mooren im Ostalpenraum.
