Das Schutzgebiet umfasst den Kirchkogel, einen Vorberg der Brucker Hochalpe im Bereich des Murdurchbruches zwischen Bruck an der Mur und Graz. Das Zentrum des Schutzgebietes stellen Sonderstandorte über Serpentinit dar. Die Wälder im Umfeld dieser Sonderstandorte sind intensiv forstlich genutzt.

Die Flora der Serpentinstandorte des Kirchkogels unterscheidet sich in einigen Details von jenen des Serpentinstockes der Gulsen in Kraubath.
