Other Site Characteristics

Die Peggauer Wand befindet sich in der Gemeinde Peggau, im Bereich des Murdurchbruches zwischen Graz und Bruck/Mur.Das Schutzgebiet umfaßt den felsigen Steilabsturz zum Murtal mit einer großen Anzahl von Höhlen und eine bergwärts anschließende geschlossen bewaldete Pufferzone. Geschützt ist nur die Westhälfte dieses Steilabsturzes, während sich in der Osthälfte zwei große Steinbrüche und der Eingang zur Lurgrotte (ausgedehnte Schauhöhle) befinden.Am Fuße der Peggauer Wand befinden sich mehrere Stollen, die während des zweiten Weltkrieges angelegt wurden. Im Inneren eines dieser Stollen befindet sich eine Erdgezeitenmeßstelle der Technischen Universität Graz. Der Stollen sowie das Höhlensystem der Wand im Bereich des Schutzgebietes dienen als Schlaf- und Überwinterungsquartier für Fledermäuse.Geologie:Paläozoischer Kalk. Die östlich anschließende Hochzone der Tanneben, zum Großteil bewaldet, ist teilweise von Blockschottern bedeckt und weist starke Karsterscheinungen auf (Dolinen).

4.2 Quality and importance

Die Peggauer Wand selbst wurde 1999 zum Naturschutzgebiet erklärt. Am Fuße der Wand befindet sich ein bereits im Jahre 1988 zum Naturschutzgebiet (Tierschutzgebiet) erklärter Stollen. Dieser Stollen dient als Überwinterungsquartier für verschiedene Fledermausarten, wie Mopsfledermaus (Barbastella barbastellus), Zwergfledermaus (Pipistrellus pipistrellus), Großes Mausohr (Myotis myotis), Kleines Mausohr (Myotis blythii), Große Hufeisennase (Rhinolophus ferrumequinum), Kleine Hufeisennase (Rhinolophus hipposideros), Graues Langohr (Plecotus austriacus) und Braunes Langohr (Plecotus auritus).
