Das Natura 2000 Gebiet Nationalpark Hohe Tauern erstreckt sich über die Bundesländer Salzburg, Kärnten und Tirol im Bereich der noch relativ unberührt erhaltenen Zentralalpenzone.

4.2 Quality and importance

Die kleinräumige Durchdringung und Verzahnung von seit Jahrtausenden genutztem Kulturland und weitgehend ursprünglicher Naturlandschaft ist das wesentliche Charakteristikum des Schutzgebietes Natura 2000 Gebiet Nationalpark Hohe Tauern.

Sowohl Gebietspflege als auch maßgebliche Entwicklungspläne werden von der Nationalparkverwaltung Hohe Tauern eigenständig durchgeführt. Finanzielle Aufwendungen werden vor allem vonseiten der Tiroler Landesregierung, zum Teil auch vom Bundesministerium für Umwelt Jugend und Familie getragen.
