Other Site Characteristics

The Plateau of Caestert was created by the cutting of the Jeker and Meuse rivers into the landscape. Species-rich forest complexes occur on lime. The southwesternly directed slopes of the Plateau of Caestert and the western flank of the Jeker have a specific microclimate which, together with the calcareous soil, has created calcareous grasslands. Under the surface large marl quarries hold large populations of bats.

4.2 Quality and importance

Important and only Flemish site with large marl quarries, valuable for wintering Bats of Annex II. Important for orchid grassland.
