Other Site Characteristics

Le site correspond aux cours de l'Oise et de la Wartoise, dans cette portion sud de la Botte du Hainaut, limitrophe de la frontière française ; il est composé de prairies de fauche, de milieux alluviaux, d'étangs mais aussi de massifs forestiers (Bois de la Forge Gérard, de la Poulette, du Bouillard, de la Flamande, du Gonrieux et de la Forge Jean-Petit). Le fond de la vallée de la Wartoise correspond à des sols gleyfiés ( notamment aux abords de l'Abbaye de Scourmont).

4.2 Quality and importance

L'Oise, la Wartoise et leurs affluents constituent une remarquable mosaïque de milieux naturels fragiles à préserver : mégaphorbiaies, cariçaies, prairies de fauche, forêts riveraines,... formant un ensemble d'une grande diversité biologique ; Présence de chênaies pédonculées sur sols lourds et hygromorphes ; Aux étangs de la Lobiette et de la Forge Gérard, présence d'associations végétales intéressantes, très bien conservées, abritant la mulette épaisse (Unio crassus); site crucial pour la conservation du Littorellion (22.12 x 22.31), végétation amphibie quasi disparue des étangs de l'Entre-Sambre-et-Meuse ; Site majeur du réseau écologique, notamment, de par la présence des prairies de fauche et de prairies à Molinia, milieux typiques de cette région de Wallonie et voués à disparaître lors des modifications des pratiques agricoles.
