Other Site Characteristics

o Le site est localisé entre Tournai et Péruwelz, au sein du Parc Naturel des Plaines de l'Escut, et occupe la plaine inondable de l'Escaut ; Le site est constitué de coupures (bras morts) et de complexes marécageux où se retrouvent des boisements alluviaux (aulnaie-frênaie alluviale de Callenelle, vieille peupleraie et aulnaies alluviales de Hollain et de Wiers...), des milieux humides plus ouverts (mégaphorbiaies, prairies humides, magnocariçaie, roselières...) et enfin des prés de fauche ; Présence de résidus de bocage.

4.2 Quality and importance

Complexes marécageux de grand intérêt (habitats et espèces d'intérêt communautaire) devenus rares en Région wallonne ; présence de plans d'eau à grands potamots, de mégaphorbiaies et de forêts allviales de valeur ; Présence de plusieurs oiseaux d'intérêt communautaire, la plupart en halte migratoire : Gorgebleue à miroir blanc, Aigrette garzette, Grande aigrette, butor étoilé... ; Présence du triton crêté (présent en plusieurs endroits du site), de la bouvière, du lézard des murailles et du rare Vertigo moulinsiana ; Site constitué d'une mosaïque de milieux humides d'une grande richesse biologique, trouvant également une place essentielle dans le réseau écologique du Hainaut occidental, en reliant la vallée de la Haine aux autres sites du Nord de la Province.
