Other Site Characteristics

C'est un site de grand intérêt paysager incluant les coteaux calcaires et une partie du fond de vallée bordant la vallée du Geer et ses affluents entre Glons et Eben-Emael. Il constitue le prolongement vers le sud des sites Natura 2000 du Sud-Limbourg hollandais et vers le nord des sites Natura 2000 de la vallée de la Meuse.

4.2 Quality and importance

Le site présente des milieux ouverts de très grand intérêt, dont les plus remarquables sont des prairies de fauche peu intensifiées et des pelouses calcaires. Ces pelouses ont une grande richesse botanique et entomologique (orchidées, hyménoptères...), et sont, avec celles du site de la Montagne Saint-Pierrre, les plus septentrionales du territoire wallon. Les zones boisées feuillues des versants abritent quant à elles des forêts du métaclimax des hêtraies neutrophile et calcicole, ainsi que de rares fragments de forêts de ravins. La partie orientale du site sert par ailleurs de terrain de chasse aux chauves-souris d'intérêt communautaire qui hibernent dans les anciennes galeries d'extraction de tuffeau de la Montagne Saint-Pierre. Ce site contribue également à l'habitat du lucane cerf-volant et du triton crêté.
