Other Site Characteristics

C'est un site constitué de 2 grandes zones : la première est formée par le cours de la Meuse mitoyenne entre Lixhe et la frontière belgo-néerlandaise et comprend aussi la nouvelle gravière de Lanaye ainsi que la presqu'île de l'Ilal, enclose en territoire néerlandais ; la seconde comprend le fond de vallée et les versants de la Julienne (affluent de la Meuse en rive droite), entre Housse et Argenteau.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les versants boisés de la vallée de la Julienne sont dominés par les forêts indigènes des métaclimax des hêtraies acidophile et neutrophile médio-européennes. Ces forêts forment des mosaïques plus ou moins intimes avec des peuplements exotiques. Certains milieux ouverts de cette vallée présentent également un intérêt non négligeable, en particulier les prairies de fauche peu intensives. Dans cette diversité d'habitats, il convient de souligner la présence du lucane cerf-volant. La Meuse et ses berges constituent quant à elles l'habitat de nombreuses espèces animales, et notamment d'une avifaune diversifiée. On peut ainsi citer le martin-pêcheur, la bécassine des marais, le harle piette, la sarcelle d'hiver, la sarcelle d'été ou encore la grande aigrette. Le site est également un des seuls endroits de la Basse Meuse ayant conservé des cordons alluviaux relevant des forêts fluviales. Le milieu aquatique est favorable à l'habitat de la bouvière et du chabot.
