Other Site Characteristics

Ce site est le plus grand massif forestier du Condroz, entre Nandrin Anthisnes et Esneux. L'alternance grès (psammites du condroz) sur les crêtes et de calcaires dans les vallées confère au site une belle diversité biologique.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ce site majoritairement forestier est dominé par des forêts du métaclimax de la hêtraie à luzule. Dans les zones périphériques et le long des vallées encaissées qui parcourent le site, la géologie permet l'apparition de forêts calcicoles et neutrophiles et de forêts de pente formant des chapelets le long de certains versants. Les zones plus humides liées aux fonds de vallée et aux suintements abritent quant à elles des chênaies-frênaies climaciques et des forêts alluviales. Ces forêts servent en outre d'habitat au pic mar, au pic noir, à la cigogne noire et à la bondrée apivore. Diverses espèces de chauves-souris d'intérêt communautaire y trouvent également une partie de leur terrain de chasse. Il convient de souligner la présence de cavités souterraines naturelles dans la partie septentrionale du site. Le milieu aquatique ne manque pas non plus d'intérêt, puisqu'il englobe aussi bien des rivières présentant des phénomènes karstiques que des mares à Characeae et un ruisseau calcaire incrustant et qu'il contribuent en outre à l'habitat du martin-pêcheur de la bouvière et du chabot. Les milieux ouverts, malgré leur faible surface à l'échelle du site, sont variés : prairies de fauche, mégaphorbiaies, pelouses calcaires... Ces différentes zones participent également à l'habitat de plusieurs espèces animales, dont la cigogne noire, l'écaille chinée, le lucane et la grande aigrette.
