Other Site Characteristics

Le site des Fagnes de Malchamps et de Stoumont comprend des milieux tourbeux d'intérêt exceptionnel et englobant non seulement la Fagne de Malchamps, mais aussi toute une série de petites tourbières et landes tourbeuses échelonnées sur la crête, au long de la Grande Vecquée entre Malchamps et Stoumont, comme la Fagne James et la réserve naturelle de Pansîre.

4.2 Quality and importance

Ces fagnes présentent principalement des landes humides à bruyère quaternée (4010), des landes sèches (4030), des transitions entre ces deux habitats. Malchamps est un site majeur du patrimoine wallon à cet égard.Egalement notable, la genévrière de Cour (5130) est connue comme étant l'une des dernières en Ardenne. Proches des zones plus humides, de suintements ou dans les cuvettes des lithalses, les landes s'enrichissent de bas-marais, de tourbières hautes actives (7110*), de tourbières hautes dégradées (7120) et de tourbières de transition ou tremblantes (7140). Entourant ces zones ouvertes, outre les résineux, les forêts relevant de la chênaie-boulaie à molinie et trientale (9190), les fragments de boulaies tourbeuses (91D0*) et ceux de hêtraies à luzule (9110).Cette alternance de zones ouvertes et fermées est de grande importance pour l'engoulevent d'Europe. La chouette de Tengmalm est présente dans les forêts résineuses environnantes. De même pour le pic noir.Les landes et tourbières représentent des habitats majeurs pour de nombreuses espèces remarquables.Quant aux milieux prairiaux, ils regroupent des prés maigres de fauche de basse et haute altitudes (6510, 6520) et une nardaie (6230*).
