Other Site Characteristics

Le site englobe la majeure partie des milieux tourbeux du Plateau des Hautes Fagnes, dont la Fagne Wallonne, La Grande Fange, la Fagne des Deux-Séries, la Fagne de Clefaye, la Fagne Leveau, Wihonfagne, ... ainsi que des zones de pessières sur sols paratourbeux et tourbeux séparant et avoisinant ces massifs.

4.2 Quality and importance

Les fagnes de ce site présentent des milieux tourbeux (tourbières hautes actives (7110), landes tourbeuses (4010), etc.) de grande qualité, bien conservés et suivis scientifiquement pour leur richesse floristique et patrimoniale intrinsèque mais également pour leur importance indéniable pour la flore, l'entomofaune et l'avifaune.Le site héberge le dernier noyau reproducteur de Tétras lyres de Wallonie et une population stable de Pie-grièches grises.De manière générale, la présence de milieux tourbeux variés, restaurables ou de valeur ainsi que la richesse de la flore (nombreuses espèces protégées), de l'entomofaune et de l'avifaune ont justifé que le site soit inclus dans le périmètre du projet LIFE Hautes-Fagnes (2007-2011). Depuis lors, de nombreuses zones ont été restaurées (ou font l'objet d'une restauration) ce qui a encore considérablement fait accroître l'intérêt et le potentiel d'accueil du site.
