Other Site Characteristics

Le site comprend des vallées de grande qualité très riche en milieux rares et en espèces. Il englobe des parcelles forestières mixtes et des zones fangeuses ouvertes.

4.2 Quality and importance

Mégaphorbiaies, prairies humides, bas-marais et landes ainsi que des fragments de tourbières forment un complexe de fond de vallée. Sur le versant, la hêtraie acidophile à luzule blanche est bien représentée. Pour les oiseaux liés au grand massif forestier comme la cigogne noire, le pics noir et cendré et la chouette de Tengmalm, le site est d'une importance indéniable. La moule perlière, présente dans un affluent allemand, pourrait potentiellement recoloniser les eaux courants de la Schwalm. Le site présente un très grand intérêt ornithologique, entomologique et botanique (seule localité belge de Vicia orobus, présence de mousses à tendance boréo-montagnarde, de lichens et champignons rares).
