4.2 Quality and importance

Le site du bassin moyen de l'Ourthe occidentale est situé en moyenne Ardenne, entre l'Hôpital de Sainte-Ode et Bonnerue. Avec ses affluents, le Laval, le Brul et le ruisseau de Magerotte, il forme un complexe de petites vallées herbagères typiques de la Moyenne Ardenne. Ce site accueille de nombreuses espèces avicoles d'intérêt communautaire qui motivent la préservation de prairies humides et sèches, du réseau bocager et des cours d'eau. En particulier, le tarier des prés, les deux pies-grièches, grise et écorcheur, sont des oiseaux particulièrement sensibles à l'intensification des prairies et l'arrachage des haies. La bécassine des marais est une visiteuse d'hiver et d'étape dépendante des milieux ouverts les plus humides : prairies fangeuses, jonchaies, cariçaies. Le complexe retenu de ces milieux constitue aussi l'habitat de plusieurs rapaces d'intérêt communautaire dont les deux espèces de milans, le busard saint-martin et la bondrée apivore. Les cours d'eau (3260) sont aussi l'habitat du chabot, de la mulette épaisse, de la lamproie de planer, de la loutre d'Europe, du martin pêcheur d'Europe, du balbuzard pêcheur et de la cigogne noire. Le long de ces cours d'eau s'étendent des mégaphorbiaies (6430), habitat d'intérêt communautaire le plus représenté du site, et des forêts alluviales (91E0*). De plus, ce site possède un grand potentiel de restauration sur les terrains alluviaux et dans les têtes de sources sur sol tourbeux.
