Site d'hivernage de la bécassine des marais d'importance locale avec 5 à 15 individus.

4.2 Quality and importance

Avec plus de 20% de sa superficie en prairie maigre de fauche, ce site comprend un des ensembles les plus importants pour cet habitat fortement menacé en Lorraine. Les trois blocs principaux de prairies maigres (Hondelange, Turpange, Bébange) se caractérisent par une excellent état de conservation, une grande surface (ensembles continus de 15 à 30 ha) et la présence d'espèces rares et protégées (Alopecurus rendlei - essentiel des stations wallonnes reprises ici, Dactylorhiza fistulosa). L'ensemble de prairies plus humides au nord de Turpange abrite également la dernière population lorraine / avant-dernière population Belge de traquet tarier (2-4 couples nicheurs). Ces prairies humides se trouvent dans la plaine d'inondation du Schiewerbach, affluent de la Messancy, qui traverse le site entre Hondelange et Turpange. Le massif forestier du Kahleck-Beneck forme un ensemble significatif de près de 200 ha de hêtraies entièrement repris dans le site, où sont bien présents les pics noir et mar. L'église Saint Hilaire à Habergy abrite occasionnellement le grand murin avec 1-3 individus tandis que le grand rhinolophe et le vespertillon à oreilles échancrées sont aussi connus du site. Le milan noir est régulièrement observé sur le site, sa nidification à proximité du site est probable. Enfin, là où le réseau bocager est encore bien fourni, 3 à 5 couples de pie-grièches écorcheurs nidifient sur le site.
