Other Site Characteristics

Dans le bassin de l'Orneau, le site reprend aussi bien des étangs et zones humides sur plateau limoneux que, plus en aval, des fonds de vallées et versants boisés plus encaissés.

4.2 Quality and importance

Dans la partie septentrionale se succèdent une série de milieux d'intérêt communautaire (cours d'eau, plans d'eau, forêts alluviales, mégaphorbiaies), formant un complexe avec des roselières. Ces milieux favorisent la présence de nombreuses espèces animales, dont les sarcelles, la bécassine des marais, la grande aigrette et le martin-pêcheur. En dehors de cette zone, le site présente un caractère majoritairement forestier, et est dominé par des forêts du métaclimax des hêtraies acidophile, neutrophile et calcicole. A la faveur de pentes plus importantes creusées par l'Orneau et ses affluents, on y voit également apparaître des forêts de ravin, habitats très rares au nord de la Meuse, tandis que les fonds de vallées sont occupées par des forêts alluviales et des chênaies-frênaies climaciques. Ces différents milieux forestiers constituent tout ou une partie de l'habitat de diverses espèces de chauves-souris et d'oiseaux, dont le pic noir et le pic mar. En périphérie des zones boisées et dans une ancienne carrière apparaissent quelques milieux ouverts d'intérêt communautaire, dont les plus remarquables sont une pelouse calcaire, une prairie maigre de fauche, des falaises et des éboulis; ces derniers milieux étant propices à l'habitat du grand duc. Les carrières souterraines constituent un habitat favorable à plusieurs espèces de chiroptères.
