Other Site Characteristics

Le site englobe le massif de la Croix-Scaille, les vallées du ruisseau de Barbais et de l'Eau du Pont en amont de Louette-St-Pierre, des prairies humides de fond de vallée autour de Louette-St-Denis, de Houdremont et entre Gedinne et Rienne.

4.2 Quality and importance

La hêtraie à luzule occupe de grandes surfaces sur la Croix-Scaille. La cigogne noire, le pic noir et le pic mar sont présents dans les milieux forestiers du site. Le Life Croix-Scaille a permis la réouverture des milieux tourbeux sur le plateau et les fonds de vallée ce qui est favorable à la leucorrhine à gros thorax, au torcol fourmilier et à l'engoulevent d'Europe.Les ruisseaux de Barbais et de Burre qui prennent leur source sur le massif sont cotoyés par des mosaïques de chênaies pédonculée à bouleau, de landes humides et de boulaies tourbeuses. Dans ces ruisseaux, ainsi que dans ceux de la Houette, de la Houillette et de Grand Foy vivent des populations de chabot, de lamproie de Planer, de martin-pêcheur et de castor. Par ailleurs, les vallées agricoles abritent de nombreuses espèces et habitats : prés de fauche submontagnards, prairies humides maigres, prés à molinia, mégaphorbiaies, pie-grièche grise et écorcheur, bécassine sourde et des marais, bondrée apivore, milan royal et cuivré de la bistorte.
