Other Site Characteristics

The site includes a part of the biggest Danube islands - Batin and big part of the former floodplain of Danube, which is transformed now to the very big fishponds. One great part of the fishponds is abandoned and has natural water regime.

4.2 Quality and importance

Important for the existence of invertebrate fauna. The site includes fishponds by the Danube River with large reedbeds and other water vegetation. Very important for migrants and local nesting water-connected species of birds also for feeding of breeders from the adjacent Romanian island in the Danube (Grey, Night and Squacco Herons and Pygmy Cormorants).

Sustainable development of fisheries, implemented by creation and maintenance of ponds with small fish of no commercial value for attracting and feeding fish-eating birds in order to reduce the interaction between fisheries and piscivorous birds. Leaving large areas of reedbeds within the area of the fishponds to ensure refuges for breeding/resting birds.
