Other Site Characteristics

The site represents limestone and marl. 30 % of the river runs through open areas, while the rest of it runs through wooded mountinous and semi-mountinous areas. The river is characterized by great denivelation, fast currency and narrow rocky river-bed.

4.2 Quality and importance

The site is an important bio-corridor between the high-mountainous parts of the Trevnenska Central Balkan Mounatins and the Yantra river basin, which is also a proposed NATURA 2000 site. There is a list of the more significant macro-zoo-benthal organizms attached. It is a result of the monitoring implemented by RIEW Veliko Tarnovo in the period 2000-2005. In table "Ecological Information - Other Important species", the species justified by 'A-National' are not necessarily included in the National Red Data Book, because its last edition is too old (1985), not up-dated and has no legislative value. The species indicated by 'A-National' are the protected flora and fauna species, included in the Bulgarian Biodiversity Act, and therefore this motivation is given highest priority.
