Other Site Characteristics

The SCI includes valleys of rivers Bebresh and Mali Iskar and well preserved areas with broadleaved forests on their slopes. Both rivers are preserved in their natural condition and densely overgrown with riparian vegetation. Oak, hornbeam and beech forests are important habitat to rare species. Karst relief with exposed rocks and caves are found close to Bozhenitsa village.

4.2 Quality and importance

Malak Iskar River and its tributary Bebresh are preserved in their natural or semi-natural condition. The rivers are following their natural riverbeds and the territories of their riparian terraces are slightly fragmented. The riparian forests of Alnus glutinosa and Salix sp. (Habitat 91E0) are preserved in excellent condition. The ichtiofauna is distinguishly rich - 14 species, 5 of which are included in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC. This makes pSCI "Bebresh" one of the most valuable for protecting the ichtiofauna. 16 species of herpetofauna are found here - 7 amphibians and 9 reptiles. 3 of them are included in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC (2 amphibians and 1 reptile). The rich ichtiofauna and the presence of Austropotamobius torrentium are important for the stable Otter (Lutra lutra) population as food resource.
