Other Site Characteristics

The Shoumen plateau is made of clay, marl, sandstone and limestone. On the surface, there are many open and underground formations with typical karst relief. The underground karst is represented by many caves, over 60 in number.

The site is one of the best carst regions in Bulgaria, rich of caves and rocky monastries.
