Other Site Characteristics

In comparison to other rivers flowing through the Danube plain Tzibritza River is a short with small watershed, collecting waters of part of West Predbalkan. The riverbed is 3-4 m. wide and 0,5 m. deep. In bigger part the riverbed is sandy or gravies. The muddy banks appear rarely after Valchedram. Few kilometers before inlet to Danube the riverbed is predominantly sandy. There are now meanders or rocky banks. Lack of industry and settlements upstream results in clean waters. Between Dolno Tzerovene and Valchedram the water is clear and sand bottom is visible. After Valchedram the water looses its clearness partially due to pollution by sewage or farm waste waters.

4.2 Quality and importance

Tzibritza river is an important biocorridor between West Balkan Mountain and Danube river In vicinity of Dolno Tzerovene and Dalgodeltzi riparian forests of Alnus glutinosa and Salix spp. (priority habitat 91EO) are partially village In vicinity of Cherni vrah and Zlatiya village, on the high right bank of the river occurs rare for Bulgaria priority habitat of Panonian steps (code 6250). It is a habitat of rare plant species such as Centaurea rumelica, Astragalus ponticus etc.
