Other Site Characteristics

The island group Aleko is among the biggest of the Bulgarian Danube islands. During the inventories it was found that in the northeast part three of the island have unified. Island Aleko in its bigger part is with cut forests and afforested with hybrid poplars (60%). The natural forests with big participation of wild vine are found in the front part of the island and the whole northern river line. For the riverside line most typical and with biggest importance is the presence of natural forests of Frahinus oxycarpa. No matter that they ate small fragments they look like floodplain forests and could serve as a model in the restoration of the natural vegetation. Even more – there is good restoration of the ash tree under the poplars.

4.2 Quality and importance

Along the Danube bank - very well preserved riverine forests 91E0. On the Aleko Islands three of th islands covered with natural forests 91E0.
