Other Site Characteristics

The site is localised in the steppe part of North Eastern Bulgaria. It includes the small hill - Kabijushka mogila and the surrounding pastures and arable lands of Kabiyuk Horse farm.

4.2 Quality and importance

The Kabiyuk site is situated in North-Eastern Bulgaria, the district of Shumen. This is one of the most preservated region of steppe vegetation in Bulgaria with many rare steppe grasslands, bushes and rare and endangered plants, including Echium russicum - species from Habitat Dirtective. The main reason for the preservation of these plant communities and species is the oldest and the biggest stud in Bulgaria, which territory includes the site Kabiyuk. There are and old thin oak forest on the territory of the site.

4.5 Documentation (optional)

Initial proposal and description of the site made by Dr. Rossen Todorov Tzonev - Department of ecology and environmental protection, Sofia University "St. Kliment Ohridski"; Chavdar Vasilev Gussev - Department of Applied Botany, Institute of Botany, Bulgarian Academy of Science. Data revised by a team of Bulgarian Academy of Sciences (http://www.bas.bg).New data provided by project "Mapping and assessment of the conservation status of the natural habitats and species - Phase 1" (see link).

BG00100.00

5.2 Relation of the described site with other sites (optional):

No information provided

5.3 Site designation (optional)

The site is the one of the several most important territories for the preservation of the steppe bushes - species (Caragana frutex, Amygdalus nana) and habitats - 40A0 and 40C0. There are many rare species - Anemone sylvestris, Peucedanum ruthenicum, Centaurea marshaliana. The population of Echium russicum is one of the biggest in Bulgaria. This is one of the main example for sustainable developement and long-time human impact, which has preservated many rare species and habitats.
