Other Site Characteristics

The grassland complex is secondarily developed instead of intensively used arable lands, plantations with wheat and potatoes. Along the Palakariya River there is (poorly developed) alder tree and ash tree riverside vegetation in different phases of degradation due to the constant felling and active grazing activities.

4.2 Quality and importance

Coverage. The greatest part of the territory was agricultural land, which has not been used actively during the previous 15 years. The quality is not so high because the native vegetation has not been recovered completely. The signs of the field bondaries are still remarkable it some areas. Here are also presented the remains of the infrastructural elements (concrete and terrestrial roads, areas for deposits, basins for chemicals, old irrigative channels, etc. The pollution in one point has been discovered as a result of human impacts along the river bank of Palakarya. Small part of the zone comprises the old agricultural yard of the co-operative farm and the motorised centre with fully ruderal type of vegetation. Although of the presence in the zone of 2 endemic plants species (which are comparatively widespread) and 4 plants, included in present edition of The Red Data Book of Bulgaria. Plants the importance of the zone is not high. Geographic coherence. Through the site is the realisation of the connection between the southeastern slopes of the Vitosha biotic complex with the analogic complex of the Rila Mountain. The nesessity for the development of the siote along the lower stream of the Palakariya River and by that will fulfill the connection with the corridor of Iskar River and the expansion of the territory of the priority for the EU habitat 91E0 (Alluvial forests with Alnus glutinosa and Fraxinus excelsior (Alno-Pandion, Alnion incanae, Salicion albae) is advidsable. Ecological coherence is destroyed by the presence of the remainings from old infrastructure, the pollution from the human activities, ruderalisation as a result of stopping of agricultural works, changing of the regime of water: tribuaries due to water consumption.
