Other Site Characteristics

The site Karlukovo is situated in the central Balkan Foothill region. It includes the calcareous plateau, which is cut through by the Iskur River and its smaller tributaries - Panega, Ruchene. This is a complex of stony habitats, different kinds of forets, meadows and steppes.

4.2 Quality and importance

The rivers of pSCI are preserved in their natural or semi-natural condition. They are following thair natural riverbeds and the territories of their riparian terraces are slightly fragmented. The riparian forests of Alnus glutinosa and Salix sp. ( Priority Habitat 91E0) forms one of the most qualiatative riparian galleries in the country. The ichtiofauna is distinguishly rich and divers (important food resource for the otter population) 9 species, 3 of which are included in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC.This makes pSCI "Karlukovo" one of the most valuable for protection of ihtiofauna, otter population and natural habitats. The natural river system is of great importance for the fish migration.
