- Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics
The AGIOS THEODOROS ATSAS site is characterized geologically from the mountains to the lowlands, just before Koutrafas village area, by igneous formations (Diabase dykes and pillowed and sheet lava flows Troodos ophiolite complex). The lowlands including the riverside along Elaia river are sedimentary (calcarenites, silts, sands, gravels and clays). Two perennial rivers cross the site, one is Asinou (Argaki ton Rotson) from the Adelfi Forest mountains and another along the lowlands called Elaia. A complex site of primarily mountain pine forest and a smaller area of bare hilly lowlands with flatlands and steep river beds intersecting the landscape. In the buffer zone of the forest the vegetation type are maquis and phrygana. There is an agriculture land that is abandoned surrounded by stone walls. There are abandoned vineyards and fruit orchards as well as some olive yards. The river sites surrounded by a variety of species such Quercus infectoria, Platanus orientalis, Alnus orientalis, Salix alba, Arundo donax, Nerium oleander, Rubus sanctus etc. |
4.2 Quality and importance
This site is a primarily coniferous habitat (Pinus brutia) with an understory of maquis / phrygana, while one fourth of the areas, the lowlands, are dedicated to cereal (barley) cultivation. The forest is part of the Adelphi state forest and is important for endemic species like the Cyprus Coal Tit Parus ater cypriotes, Cyprus Wheatear Oenanthe cypriaca, Cyprus Scops Owl Otus scops cyprius and migrant breeders like the Masked Shrike Lanius nubicus and Cretzschmars Bunting Emberiza caesia. Other important forest birds that nest in the area in good numbers are the Woodlark Lullula arborea, Hoopoe Upupa epops and Linnet Carduelis cannabina. The maquis / phrygana understory of the forest provides habitat for the other endemic, the Cyprus Warbler Sylvia melanothorax. The lower open hilly ground bordering the forest is criss-crossed with many small and some steep sided perennial streams that provide the nesting habitat for several pairs of European Rollers Coracias garrulus. The open hill-sides and plains are used as a nesting and feeding ground by many Eurasian Thick-knees Burhinus oedicnemus - large post-breeding flocks do congregate here as well during autumn. The whole area is used by wandering Bonnelis Eagles Hieraaetus fasciatus as a hunting area as well as Accipiter gentilis. |
