No habitat types are reported for the site
3.2 Species referred to in Article 4 of Directive 2009/147/EC and listed in Annex II of Directive 92/43/EEC and site evaluation for them
- Group: A = Amphibians, B = Birds, F = Fish, I = Invertebrates, M = Mammals, P = Plants, R = Reptiles
- S: in case that the data on species are sensitive and therefore have to be blocked for any public access enter: yes
- NP: in case that a species is no longer present in the site enter: x (optional)
- Type: p = permanent, r = reproducing, c = concentration, w = wintering (for plant and non-migratory species use permanent)
- Unit: i = individuals, p = pairs or other units according to the Standard list of population units and codes in accordance with Article 12 and 17 reporting (see reference portal)
- Abundance categories (Cat.): C = common, R = rare, V = very rare, P = present - to fill if data are deficient (DD) or in addition to population size information
- Data quality: G = 'Good' (e.g. based on surveys); M = 'Moderate' (e.g. based on partial data with some extrapolation); P = 'Poor' (e.g. rough estimation); VP = 'Very poor' (use this category only, if not even a rough estimation of the population size can be made, in this case the fields for population size can remain empty, but the field "Abundance categories" has to be filled in)

Other Site Characteristics
AGIA THEKLA LIOPETRI is a linear, ribbon-like site stretching along the coastal belt west of Ayia Napa town. It consists of a low-lying, mostly vegetation-free, rocky coastline, with isolated stretches of sandy beach to the east of the site and areas of open land with patches of phrygana vegetation (dominated by Sarcopoterium spinosum) behind the rocky coastal belt. Crithmum maritimum and Inula crithmoides are found growing along the rocky and sandy shore, while the S. spinosum dominated patchy phrygana vegetation behind the coastal strip includes Juniperus phoenicea, Pistacia lentiscus, Rhamnus oleoides, Atriplex halimus, Asparagus stipularis and Echium angustifolium. The land immediately north of the site has been developed with holiday homes and there is a well-used track running along most of the length of the site, immediately behind the coastal belt. To the east of the site lies the chapel of Agia Thekla. |
4.2 Quality and importance
AGIA THEKLA LIOPETRI is among the three best migration staging points and wintering sites for Charadrius leschenaultii in Cyprus, which makes it an important migration staging site for the species in the EU as a whole. Turkey is the European breeding stronghold for this migratory species, with a breeding population of between 800 1,200 individuals, and a significant proportion of this population passes through Cyprus, with a few birds over-wintering. AGIA THEKLA LIOPETRI was classified as an IBA by Birdlife International in 2004 for regularly holding 1% of the European flyway of C. leschenaultii. The coastal site is also a good migration stop-over point or wintering area for 25 other migratory species (16 of them Annex I species). It is among the best migration stop-over sites in Cyprus for Charadrius hiaticula and Alcedo atthis (the latter is also common at the site during winter months). AGIA THEKLA LIOPETRI is one of the few sites in Cyprus beyond the species Kleides Islands breeding colony where Larus auduinnii is regularly observed. The site is also among the few areas in Cyprus where Cursorius cursor is regularly seen. It is also a breeding site for Charadrius alexandrinus. |
