Flachwelliges Gelände als Truppenübungsplätze genutzt mit großfl. Sandheiden, Moorkomplexen u. Übergangsmooren.Im zentr. Bereich größere Offenlandflächen, Randbereiche mit großen Anteilen Kiefern-,Misch- u.Bruchwäldern.

Wichtiges Brutgebiet für die Vogellebensgemeinschaft trocken-warmer Standorte mit einem hohen Anteil strukturreicher Wald-Heide-Übergänge. Herausragende Bedeutung als eines der letzten natürlichen Vorkommen des Birkhuhns in Niedersachsen.
