Waldgebiet auf vielfältigem Relief. Frische Kalk-Buchenwälder, Waldmeister-Buchenwälder kalkärmerer Standorte, Hainsimsen- und Orchideen-Buchenwälder, Schluchtwälder, Quellbereiche und Bäche mit Erlen-Eschenwäldern, Kalkfelsen.

4.2 Quality and importance

Eines der bedeutendsten Kalkfels- und Buchenwaldgebiete Niedersachsens. Ferner sehr bedeutsam aufgrund der naturnahen Biotopkomplexe kalkreicher Bachtäler (mit prioritär zu schützenden Kalktuff-Quellen und Erlen-Eschenwäldern). Endemische Subspezies (nicht in Auswahlliste): Hieracium bifidum ssp. hollei, Hieracium glaucinum ssp. suntaliense, Hieracium schmidtii ssp. subcaesioides. Vielfältige Felsbildungen (u. a. mit natürlichen Aufschlüssen), Gefällestufe mit Wasserfall, Kluftfugen- und Karsthöhlen, Bachschwinde, Sinterbildungen.
