Höhenzug aus Jura-Kalken. Vorherrschend frische Kalkbuchenwälder, ferner Schatthangwälder, Felsen mit Blaugras-Rasen, Orchideen-Buchenwälder, Höhlen, ausgedehnte magere Glatthafer-Wiesen, Quellbereiche und Kalkmagerrasen.

Eines der größten Kalkbuchenwald-, Schluchtwald- und Kalkfels-Gebiete im Naturraum Weser- und Leinebergland und in Niedersachsen überhaupt. Eines der größten Vorkommen magerer submontaner Glatthafer-Wiesen des Naturraums.
