Bei dem VSG handelt es sich um eines der größten zusammenhängenden Buchen- und Eichenwaldgebiete in NRW. Das VSG ist Bestandteil des Nationalparks Eifel und umfasst das FFH-Gebiet Kermeter, Urfttalsperre und Oberersee sowie den Hetzinger Wald.

4.2 Quality and importance

Von landesweiter Bedeutung ist das Brutvorkommen des Mittelspechts. Weitere gebietstyp. Brutvogelarten sind Schwarz- u. Grauspecht, Uhu, Rot- u. Schwarzmilan sowie Wespenbussard. Der Schwarzstorch tritt als regelmäßiger Nahrungsgast und als unregelmäßiger Brutvogel auf.
