Landschaftlich einzigartiges Waldgebiet mit Bächen, Quellen, Stillgewässern, Felsen, Blockhalden, Steinbrüchen, Bruch-, Auen- und Schluchtwäldern, wärme-getönte Standorte (u.a. Weinbergsbrachen, Gehölze), Obstwiesen, Naßgrünland. Ergänzung zu 3.3.: Im Gebiet gibt es bedeutsame Vorkommen folgender Vogelarten: Eisvogel, Grauspecht, Mittelspecht, Nachtigall, Neuntöter, Rotmilan, Schwarzspecht, Schwarzstorch, Uhu, Wanderfalke, Zaunammer, Zippammer

Großer Waldkomplex mit landesweit repräsentativen Erlen-Eschen-, Waldmeister-Buchen- und Hainsimsen-Buchenwäldern, die Schluchtwälder und Labkraut-Eichen-Hainbuchenwälder zählen zu den größten in NRW, eins von zwei Vorkommen der Zippammer. Historische Denkmäler wie Burgruinen, Siedlungswüstungen, Hügelgräber, historische Waldnutungzungsformen, nördlichster Wein-Anbau im Rheintal reich strukturierte Vulkanlandschaft (ausgedehnte Blockhalden, Steinbrüche, Stollen)
