Großflächiger mesotropher Voralpensee in Jungmoränen-Landschaft mit ausgedehnten Niedermoorzonen, wasserreichstes stehendes Gewässer Bayerns (zweitgrößter See).

Eines der wichtigsten Beispiele oligo- bis mesotropher Seen in Deutschland mit einem Hauptvorkommen der Mairenke, großflächige Schneidried-Bestände und Streuwiesen mit Windelschnecken-Populationen. Sumpfquellen mit rezent stattfindender Tuffsand-Bildung auf mehreren hundert Quadratmetern Fläche
