Other Site Characteristics

Brobæk Mose, tidligere kaldet Insulinmosen og Gentofte Sø er et værdifuldt naturområde beliggende midt i Gentofte by. Hele området har oprindeligt været dækket af en op til 17 meter dyb sø, der gennem årtusinder langsomt er blevet omdannet til mose vestfra. Dette er sket ved at vand- og sumpplanter langsomt vokser længere ud i søen, hvor de døde plantedele ophobes som dynd og tørv. For at forhindre at søen gror helt til, er der gravet kanaler gennem rørskoven. Idag har søen en gennemsnitsdybde på en meter og over halvdelen af bunden er dækket med bundgrøde af især kransnålalger, hvoraf 8 arter kendes fra søen. Grøden er bl.a. med til at sikre det klare vand og er gemmested for søens dyreliv. Mosen er delvist tilgroet med en artsrig naturskov og på de åbne arealer ses mose og engområder, der ligeledes har en artsrig vegetation.

4.2 Quality and importance

Området er af en usædvanlig god kvalitet, hvilket bl.a. skyldes at søen har været brugt til drikkevandsforsyning for København og derfor stort set altid har været beskyttet mod eutrofiering og anden forurening. Der er i mosen registreret 3 plantearter, der er rødlistede i Danmark. I 1992 blev søen registreret som en af Danmarks 10 reneste søer over 20 ha.
