Other Site Characteristics

Gribskov er totalt på ca. 5600 ha og er Danmarks næststørste sammenhængende skovområde. Jordbunden er generelt mager, især de centrale dele af området der eksistrerer på sandet bund, mens man i de østlige og vestlige dele kan finde mere frodig bund. Området ligger på en gammel israndslinie med randmoræner. Disse morænevolde strækker sig fra nord til syd, med søer og moser i fordybningerne imellem sig. Dette gør landskabet kuperet og meget afvekslende. Store dele af skoven er udlagt som naturskov, -ialt ca. 1000 ha, hvoraf langt størstedelen ligger indenfor habitatområdets grænser. Lokaliteten er meget varierende, med et utal af små mose eller søområder, vandløb, skov på både tør og fugtig bund, eng mm. En stor del af arealet er dækket af nåleskov, mest rødgran og ca. halvdelen udgøres af løvskov; birk, eg og især bøg.I fuglebeskyttelsesområdet indgår endvidere Møllekrogen som er den sydvestre spids af Esrum Sø samt de omkringliggende arealer med tørve-grave, græssede enge, elleskov, pilekrat og rørsump.

Området er et vigtigt område for bevaring af skov- og skovlysningstilknyttede fuglearter, af særlig betydning er bestandene af Hvepsevåge (Pernis apivorus), Sortspætte (Dryocopus martius) og Rødrygget Tornskade (Lanius collurio).
