Other Site Characteristics

Saltbæk Vig består af en stor, stærkt eutrofieret lagune, der er omgivet af rørskove, enge samt små elle- og birkeskove. Lagunen er afskåret fra ha-vet af en række småøer forbundet med diger. Saltbæk Vig er dannet over den druknede hedeslette foran Bjergsted Bakker. Den blev fra starten naturligt afsnøret som lagune fra Sejerø Bugten af vinkelforlandet og barriererne ved Vrøj.

4.2 Quality and importance

Saltbæk Vig er en værdifuld fuglelokalitet og har stor betydning som rastelokalitet, bl.a. for Sangsvane (Cygnus cygnus), Havørn (Haliaetus albicilla), Pibeand (Anas penelope), Krikand (Anas crecca crecca). Flokke på flere hundrede gæs, heriblandt Grågås (Anser anser anser), overvintrer hvert år uanset vejret ved Saltbæk Vig.
